Drug-Free Workplace

Dear YouDig?

Our team operates heavy equipment, and naturally we are always very safety conscious. We are very worried about the current heroin/opioid epidemic. What can we do to minimize our risk?

-This is Crazy

Dear TIC,

Zero tolerance is the only sane approach. Reports state that drug use at the workplace is down overall over the past decade. However, heroin use has skyrocketed up 86 percent! To reduce the risk you must screen, educate and follow through. Any employer failing to have a process for dealing with drugs in general and heroin specifically is out of their mind.

Zero tolerance coupled with an assistance program for those voluntarily seeking help is one solution. Doing nothing should not be an option. If you don’t have a drug screening policy, get one NOW. If you put your head in the sand, your legs will get cut off.

Teach your management team to identify problems so catastrophe can be averted. Educate your employees to spot users and anonymously report issues. Finally, help yourself by creating a system for employees seeking help to come forward and then GET THEM HELP!
